EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Financial Assistance Program - General Guidelines
The financial assistance we are able to provide depends on the amount of funds we have for that month.
Mortgage, Rental, Hotel, and Rental Deposits - by appointment only.
Utility assistance walk-in appointments are taken between the hours of 8:30 am – 12:00 pm Monday- Thursday.
PLEASE NOTE: Electrical assistance is provided for any Guilford resident, including High Point (HP) residents, who have a Duke Energy account in their name. High Point residents who do not have a Duke Energy account are not eligible for services.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must have income (employment, SSI, SSDI, SS, Veteran Benefits, etc.)
- May ask for tax returns, tax refund amount, child support, bank statements, etc.
- Must have a verifiable unexpected crisis that caused a brief financial hardship.
- The applicant’s name must be on the utility bill.
- You must be in good standing with your landlord or mortgage holder (not facing eviction or foreclosure), Or your landlord/mortgage holder agrees to work with you.
- Applicants can only receive assistance once per year.
The financial assistance program has a lifetime limit for financial assistance. Clients who have reached their lifetime limit are still eligible for food and other non-financial services with our agency.
You must bring the following documents with you for the interview:
- Picture ID
- Proof of income for the current month and the previous month for everyone in your household
- Proof/receipts of any bills paid out for the current month and the previous month by anyone in your household.
- Proof of crisis
For rental deposits, please bring the additional documents below:
- New lease or letter of approval from the landlord that states the security amount, monthly rental payment /prorated amount needed to move in.
- Must show proof that all other deposits (water, lights, and gas) and move-in fees have been paid.
- Section 8 residents must show proof that the unit has passed inspection.

Food Assistance through our Choice Food Pantry:
The food pantry is open Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Food is available every 7(seven) days per household. Must have proper ID and present mail or other documentation with a Greensboro, Guilford County address. If you are unable to provide a proper ID, you will receive a one-time overnight order instead of a full food order. For questions about food assistance, please call 336-271-5959 ext. 361.
