Leadership Greensboro Seniors will conduct its spring food drive to benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry this weekend and next.
Volunteer members from more than 50 church congregations in the city will be collecting food at participating grocery stores around the city.
This weekend, volunteers will be at local Lowes Food stores. Next weekend, volunteers will collect at Harris Teeter and Food Lion stores. Compare and Bestway will also be accepting donations.
This is the 33rd time that Leadership Greensboro Seniors, an active group of retired and semi-retired senior citizens, has coordinated this effort. Since its inception in 1992, the drive has grown dramatically both in terms of volunteer congregations and participating stores, and in the amount of food collected.
Last fall, more than 85,000 pounds of non-perishable food items were collected and distributed on an emergency basis to nearly 8,500 needy families through Greensboro Urban Ministry.
Donations should include one or more canned or non-perishable food items such as:
Protein Sources
• Tuna, Salmon, etc.
• Beef Stew, Spam, Corned Beef
• Peanut Butter, 18 oz. jars
Vegetables
• Greens, e.g. Turnip, Mixed Vegetables
• Peas (green)
• Tomatoes, Corn, Green Beans
Fruits
• Peaches, Pears, Fruit Cocktail, Applesauce
Other Items
• Soups
• Sugar, 2 lbs.
• Dry milk
• Oatmeal, 18 oz.
• Macaroni & cheese
• Bags of dry beans
• Rice, 1 lb. or larger bags
